IF YOU are bent on losing weight, there are six most unhealthy eating habits you must absolutely avoid.

1) Finishing your meals with a soft drink or soda

Finishing every meal with a can of soda or soft drink only spikes your blood sugar levels and makes you crave for unhealthy, sugary foods.

Research has also shown that obesity is higher among soda-drinking Americans and that drinking one twelve-ounce soda a day can add 15 pounds to your weight in one year.

Replace the unhealthy eating habit of drinking calorie-rich sodas or soft drinks after every meal with a healthier habit of drinking unsweetened teas and plain water.

2) Skipping Breakfast

Skipping breakfast will NOT help you lose weight. Period.

Breakfast as the first meal of the day is absolutely essential to rev up the body’s metabolism (after having been at rest the night before). It sets the body up to burn calories and fat throughout the day.

It is an absolutely unhealthy eating habit to skip breakfast as it will lower the body’s metabolism and blood sugar levels. You feel tired and hungry. This usually leads to unhealthy eating and bingeing at the next meal and throughout the day ” a perfect setup for weight gain!

3) Skipping Meals

Some people think erroneously that skipping a meal or two a day will help them lose weight fast. On the contrary, skipping meals will push the body into a false state of starvation. The body stops burning fat and calories. People who skip meals tend to go for unhealthy eating binges afterwards.

Improve your eating habits by eating smaller and frequent meals (five to six times a day). Frequent eating keeps the body’s metabolism ticking throughout the day. Include two healthy snacks of fruit, nuts, seeds or low fat drinks to make up the five meals.

4) Eating Refined Carbohydrates

The problem with eating refined carbohydrates such as white bread and processed baked foods such as cakes, cookies, bagels and donuts is it makes you crave for more of the same unhealthy foods. Eating refined carbohydrates force our blood sugars to go on a roller coaster ride, resulting in cravings and eventual weight gain.

Break the cycle of unhealthy eating by switching to eating whole grain foods and natural unprocessed foods. Use the Glycemic Index as a guide to eating good carbs.

5) Drinking Too Little Water

The body needs water to lose weight! Water is needed by the body to convert the carbohydrates we eat to glycogen, the stored fuel in our muscles and liver. Our metabolic rate slows down when the body is dehydrated. Drinking sufficient water also eases our hunger pangs. Drink at least 8 glasses of still water a day.

6) Eating Foods High In Saturated Fats

These unhealthy foods have no place in the diet of anyone who want to lose weight. Cut down on red meats and dairy products. Limit saturated fats to no more than 7 per cent of your maximum calorie intake a day. On a 1,500-calorie a day diet, no more than 105 calories should come from saturated fats.
